The New Year is right around the corner, and if you’re like most of us, you’re already thinking of some ways to feel healthier and happier come January 1st. With so many healthy habits to consider, however, it can be tough to choose just a few of them. But with these five ideas from Robert Paugh, plant-based nutrition and health consultant, you will quickly develop healthier habits to start your New Year off on the right foot with healthy habits!

1. Eat More Plants

Eating more plant-based foods is one of the best steps you can take toward improved health and well-being, as the benefits of plant-based diets range from weight loss and improved gut health to protection against diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Plus, plant-based diets are better for the environment, farmed animals, and your wallet! According to The Beet, following a plant-based diet could reduce your annual grocery bill by approximately $1,260 — while also benefiting your health and the world as a whole.

To incorporate more plants into your diet, try shopping at a local health foods store, community co-op, or farmers market. You could even sign up for a produce delivery service to have fresh fruits and veggies delivered directly to your door! A few great options include Imperfect Foods, Hungry Harvest, and Farmbox Direct.

2. Develop a Healthy Daily Routine

Daily routines are important for a variety of reasons, but developing and sticking to one isn’t always easy — especially when you’re busy with work, school, parenting, and modern-day life. To help you get started, Leon Ho of Lifehack shares four daily routine examples to fit your lifestyle in the New Year, whether you’re looking to improve your health and energy levels, organize your life, boost your productivity at work, or strengthen your personal relationships.

3. Care for Your Mental Health

In the age of COVID-19, self-care is imperative to your mental and emotional well-being. Here are some simple self-care strategies to start practicing in the New Year:

  • Write in a gratitude journal at least once or twice a week.
  • Fill your wardrobe with comfy basics to feel happier and healthier in your skin.
  • Boost your mental health with yoga poses like Happy Baby, Child’s Pose, and Legs Up the Wall.
  • Eat mood-boosting foods like (vegan) dark chocolate, kombucha, bananas, oats, and berries.
  • Nourish your body and mind with a five-minute daily workout.
  • Meditate with an app such as Calm, Headspace, or Insight Timer.

4. Cleanse and Declutter Your Home

If household tensions are high and your family is complaining or criticizing one another more than usual, it may be time to cleanse and declutter your home in the New Year. By cleaning with natural products like lemons, white vinegar, and essential oils, reducing clutter from your home, and letting in some fresh air and natural light, you’ll make your home a happier and more positive place to live.

5. Adopt a Whole Foods, Plant-Based Diet

To improve your head-to-toe health and wellness in 2021, try transitioning to a whole-foods, plant-based diet. To avoid feeling overwhelmed during the transition, you could enlist the help of plant-based nutrition and health consultant Robert Paugh as you slowly make the switch over several weeks or months — or you could start by eating fully plant-based at least one day a week (e.g., Meatless Monday).

Adopting a healthy plant-based diet takes time and planning — especially if you’ll be eating mostly whole foods rather than processed or refined foods. However, making the switch to a plant-based lifestyle is easier than you’d think. From tofu and tempeh to lentils, chickpeas, nuts, and seeds, there are so many nutritious foods to be enjoyed on a plant-based diet!

Near Year, New Health

By starting these five healthy habits in the New Year, you’ll improve your physical, mental, and emotional health — and change your life for the better. These healthy habits may seem simple enough, but they have the power to transform your life and make you a happier, healthier, and more compassionate human being.
