Find your why - why do I want to do this!
To find your why is one of the most important things we need to do when we set goals to make changes in our lives. It is important to have a very clear understanding of why this is occurring. Some people make resolutions at the start of the New Year, but often don’t stick to their decision for very long. Most often this is because they hadn’t really thought about why they wanted to make a change in the first place. You must find your why and look at the reasons that you want to make make a change or in this cased start a Plant-Based Diet.
You can’t set goals for yourself until you know why you need to achieve this new goal. How long will it take you to get there? Do you have a plan for how you will accomplish it? These are all questions to ask yourself before starting.
This is the same process you should take when deciding to start a plant-based lifestyle. Why have you decided to change your way of eating? Do you want to lose weight, get healthy, or start a career in nutrition? You should have a clear reason and understanding your why. If you do not find your why you most likely will not be successful in making the change.
For example, someone wanting to lose weight will say it is to lose the 10 lbs they put on since graduating college. Or so they will fit into their clothes and improve their appearance. Someone who loves animals and feels guilty eating meat or wearing clothing made with fur can tell you why they made their choice. Whatever your reason for deciding to start a plant-based diet, make sure you know why you’re doing it. Going vegan has a lot of health benefits and you can find out about those benefits.

Once You Know Your Why - Stick With It
The video above is of Dr. Sardana from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. She explains why many people fail to stick with their decisions because they did not have clear goals in place ahead of time. The point is that if you do not know your "why" your chances of having success is not good. You won’t stick with it if you’re not passionate about your reason why.
Almost 20 years ago, two well-known alcoholism researchers, Carlo C. DiClemente and J. O. Prochaska, introduced a six-stage model of change to help professionals understand their clients with addiction problems and motivate them to change. Their model is not based on abstract theories but on their personal observations of how people went about modifying problem behaviors such as smoking, overeating and problem drinking.
The TTM model indicates that individuals move through six stages of change: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and termination. The details of the stages are listed below.
The TTM model of change
- Precontemplation ("not ready") – "People are not intending to take action in the foreseeable future, and can be unaware that their behavior is problematic"
- Contemplation ("getting ready") – "People are beginning to recognize that their behavior is problematic, and start to look at the pros and cons of their continued actions"
- Preparation ("ready") – "People are intending to take action in the immediate future, and may begin taking small steps toward behavior change"
- Action – "People have made specific overt modifications in modifying their problem behavior or in acquiring new healthy behaviors"
- Maintenance – "People have been able to sustain action for at least six months and are working to prevent relapse"
- Termination – "Individuals have zero temptation and they are sure they will not return to their old unhealthy habit as a way of coping”
At the beginning of self-discovery you are most likely in the Contemplation or Preparation stage. Below are some questions to ask yourself for determining your “why”:
- Have you outlined a plan to reach your goal?
- How will you feel when you accomplish it?
- Will you feel bad if you give up?
- Which feeling do you like better?
- Will accomplishing your goal make you feel good about your decision?
What plans do you have for when you reach your goal?
Are you going to have a celebration? You should have something to mark your success that you can look back on later. If not, start making big plans now so you have that incentive for when you reach your weight loss goal.
Will losing weight make you healthy? If you’re overweight and take medications it may be possible to take less of it as your weight decreases. You may need to buy a new wardrobe because your clothes won’t fit anymore, you’ll have to buy smaller ones.
If you’re trying to be healthier you could start shopping at a local farmer’s market, buying high-quality farm fresh fruits and vegetables, rice, oats, and beans. You could treat yourself to a new high-speed blender for making fruit smoothies and homemade soups.
No matter what your goal is, whether it is to lose a few pounds or start training for a marathon, you will never achieve the success you want if you don’t find your why. You have to have a plan to make it happen. Let's get started on your journey!
